He has been awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training and is therefore privileged to be listed in the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. He also undertook a fellowship at the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre in Australia. This is a prestigious unit, which treats national and international athletes from the whole of Australia and provided the medical staff in charge of running the Sydney 2000 Olympics. David has also trained at the Austin Hospital Melbourne under Dr. J. Bartlett. In the USA David has spent time at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, the Houston Clinic, Atlanta, the Kerland Jobe Clinic, Los Angeles and the University of Pittsburg, Department of Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine.

During his time Mr Johnson was trained in the latest techniques of knee surgery and replacement, shoulder surgery, sports injuries and arthroscopic day care surgery, and articular cartilage reconstruction. These techniques are designed to achieve and improve rapid patient recovery, rehabilitation and subsequent patient outcome.

Mr Johnson is responsible for tutoring students, physiotherapists and nursing staff, and regularly lectures at national and international meetings to Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has undertaken work as a visiting Professor in Poland and Riyadh. He has also provided advice and treated players for the Football Association, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Cardiff City, Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Bath City football clubs. In respect of Rugby this includes Bath and Bristol Rugby Clubs, the South African Springboks, the Somerset and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and many athletes including international long distance marathon runners, Olympic cyclists and professional tour golfers.
